About Aus Health Cover

Radif Partners reads the ATO income tests for the Medicare levy surcharge and the private health insurance rebate, the Lifetime Health Cover rules published by the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman, and the monthly PrivateHealth.gov.au product file on data.gov.au. From that file it ranks every open hospital policy that avoids the surcharge, state by state and for singles, couples and families, then sets the cheapest one against the surcharge you would pay without it. It sells no policy, takes no commission and asks for no contact details.

Why this site exists

Each year around 1 July, and again at tax time, many Australians ask the same question: my income has crossed the line, do I pay the Medicare levy surcharge or do I buy hospital cover? The ATO explains the thresholds and the rates very well, and rightly says nothing about prices. The pages that do talk about prices belong to insurers and comparison services, and they end on a quote form, a phone call or a short list of partner funds. Some still print the 2025-26 thresholds in the 2026-27 year.

This site does better than the first Google result because it puts in dollars, for your income, your state, your age and your family, the 2026-27 Medicare levy surcharge against the net price of the cheapest hospital policy that avoids it, chosen among every open policy of the PrivateHealth.gov.au file of 1 October 2026, after the rebate and any Lifetime Health Cover loading, with no quote form and no list of partner insurers.

Who publishes it

The site is published by Radif Partners, a company that builds calculators on public rules. It is not a government agency and is not affiliated with the Australian Taxation Office, Services Australia, the Department of Health, the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman or any health insurer. It is not a financial adviser or an insurance broker, sells no policy, takes no commission or referral fee, and has no partner to send you to.

What we rely on

For the surcharge and the rebate: the ATO pages on income thresholds and rates for 2026-27 (ato.gov.au), the M2 question of the tax return instructions, and the Department of Health circular that sets the rebate adjustment factor each 1 April. For the loading: the Lifetime Health Cover rules and worked examples on PrivateHealth.gov.au. For prices: the product file the Ombudsman publishes every month on data.gov.au, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia licence.

What the site leaves out

We do not judge whether a policy suits your health needs, list waiting periods, gap payments or the hospitals an insurer has agreements with, or compare extras cover. Our premiums are the published base premiums, without the age-based discount some insurers offer to people under 30 or any fund-specific promotion. The method page lists every filter and formula; the editorial policy explains how corrections are made.

Every result on the site is an estimate only and not tax advice or a recommendation to buy a policy.

Surcharge and rebate figures follow the ATO tables for 2026-27; premiums come from the PrivateHealth.gov.au file and change every 1 April. Your notice of assessment and your insurer's quote are what count. General information, not tax, legal or financial advice.
